WHO’S THAT GUY?
As a boy, Casey Cochran was surrounded by inspiration for what would become his life’s passion. The now 26-year-old eco-entrepreneur, who started the environmentally friendly Web site www.ocgreenguide.com, attended El Morro Elementary School when developers were still banished from surrounding Crystal Cove. Since then, he has spent six months on a sailboat, traversed Europe rock climbing and hiking and returned to the states bent on making O.C. a greener place. With a mom who was editor of Powder - he learned to ski at age 2 from David Moe, a.k.a. Captain Powder - and a home near O.C. waves, he couldn’t resist striking up a love affair with Mme Nature. His bags are packed for his next globetrot, but first he’s coordinating an art show and silent auction March 20 at Irvine’s 98ten gallery. The show features artists Jesse Miller, Kathy Jones and others to raise funds for the Laguna Canyon Conservancy, Heal the Bay and Surfrider Foundation. The next morning, he’ll be off in search of adventure. But he’ll be back with a sustainable vengeance!
So what’s with the whole living on a sailboat thing? I lived on it through rain and shine, leaks and creaks, traveling with the intent of opening my eyes past what I was accustomed to seeing. While I love it here, and it will always be home, there is much to be gained from learning about other cultures. While traveling, I noticed how people interact with their environments and how their everyday actions affect their surroundings. No matter where I went people recycled. There as minimal waste. How did the experience change you? Great changes start small. Simply being aware of my individual impact is probably the greatest thing I learned. I’ve been using reusable grocery bags since I’ve been back and I can’t imagine how many plastic bags I’ve avoided using - hundreds if not thousands. What has surprised you most while creating the Web site? How quickly word spread and how many wonderful, smart people are seriously engaged in the green movement.
